I was scrolling LinkedIn recently when I came across a post about Donald Hoffman and his theory of consciousness as something fundamental to the universe rather than something produced by matter. It suggested that consciousness might not be an aftereffect of brains, but the deeper substrate from which reality, spacetime, physics, and perception emerge.
That’s the sort of idea that makes me want to wander off into a research cave for three days and come back with a laptop full of notes.
I’m not claiming Hoffman has solved consciousness, gravity, quantum mechanics, and reality. That kind of summary tends to get inflated very quickly on social media. But the idea itself is interesting: what if consciousness isn’t inside the universe in the way we usually imagine? What if the universe, as we experience it, is inside consciousness?
That led me back to another idea I’ve been circling for a while: the simulation hypothesis.
Simulation Without An External Source
Usually, when people talk about living in a simulation, they drift toward an external programmer. Some advanced civilization, machine intelligence, godlike architect, or cosmic engineer is assumed to be running the system from outside. Reality is treated as software, and therefore someone must have written it.
But I don’t think that conclusion follows.
“Reality may be simulation-like” doesn’t automatically mean “reality was programmed by a being”. It only means that what we experience may be generated, mediated, rendered, compressed, rule-bound, or interface-like. Those are structural claims. They do not, by themselves, identify a programmer.
There are other possibilities.
Reality could be a self-simulating system. It could be generated from within rather than imposed from outside. It could emerge from information, relations, observation, and constraint without needing a separate architect standing behind the curtain.
Or, more strangely, it could be consciousness-based.
This is where Hoffman’s work becomes interesting as a springboard, even if one doesn’t accept every part of his theory. His Interface Theory of Perception argues, in simplified terms, that evolution didn’t necessarily shape perception to show us reality as it truly is. It shaped perception to help us survive. We don’t see the code of reality. We see icons. We see a usable interface.
That metaphor is powerful. A folder icon on a desktop doesn’t resemble the electrical states, machine code, storage architecture, or physical hardware beneath it. The icon isn’t “false” in a useless sense. It’s an interface object. It gives us a practical way to interact with something deeper and more complex than we can directly perceive.
What if physical reality is like that?
Not fake. Not meaningless. Not “just an illusion” in the dismissive sense. But interface-like.
Matter, space, time, bodies, objects, and causality might be the experienced interface of a deeper process. And if consciousness is fundamental, perhaps the interface isn’t generated by an external machine at all. Perhaps it’s generated by consciousness interacting with itself.
The Swarm of Consciousness
This is where I find the beehive metaphor useful.
Imagine each conscious being as a bee of awareness, humming along on a flight path it partly chooses and partly inherits from the larger hive. Not a separate ghost trapped in meat, but a local node in a much larger conscious system. Each one signals, responds, attends, remembers, anticipates, and interprets. These fields overlap. They interfere. They stabilize. They constrain one another. Together, they form something like a hive: not one flat undifferentiated mind, but not fully separate minds either.
The world we experience could be the shared interface produced by that buzzing hive of activity.
That doesn’t mean humans personally imagine reality into existence. That’s too simplistic, and it collapses into solipsism. I cannot decide gravity is no longer real or wish away illness, entropy, hunger, or death. Reality pushes back. It has rules. It has persistence.
But a consciousness-based computational reality wouldn’t be arbitrary. It wouldn’t be private fantasy. It would be rule-based, relational, and collective. Individual conscious agents would participate in reality, but they wouldn’t individually control it.
In that model, computation isn’t something happening on a cosmic laptop. Computation is the rule-following activity of consciousness itself. States shift. Probabilities narrow. Interactions update the system. Memory creates continuity. Attention selects from possibility. Feedback stabilizes shared patterns. Reality “renders” not because a machine outside the universe is drawing pixels, but because consciousness is organizing overlapping possibilities into shared experience.
This may also explain why simulation metaphors feel so tempting in the first place.
We live in an age of computers, games, networks, procedural generation, artificial intelligence, and virtual worlds. So when we look at reality and notice its strangeness—quantum uncertainty, observer effects, information limits, mathematical structure, perceptual compression—we reach for the language of computation. We say: maybe the universe is like software.
So perhaps we have the metaphor partly backward. Maybe reality doesn’t resemble computation because it’s running on a machine. Maybe computation resembles reality because computation is a formalized version of something deeper: structured becoming. Patterns. Constraints. Selection. Recursion. Memory. Transformation.
In other words, computation may be one way consciousness behaves when it generates stable experience.
Simulation Hypothesis As Metaphysics
This would make the simulation hypothesis less like theology and more like metaphysics. The question wouldn’t be, “Who programmed the universe?” Instead it would be, “What kind of substrate gives rise to a world that behaves as if it is rendered, rule-bound, relational, and informational?”
An external programmer is one possible answer, but it’s not the only answer. Just as a godlike architect is one possible answer, but it’s not required.
A base-reality civilization running ancestor simulations is also one possible answer. But it only moves the mystery one level up. Who made their reality? Are they simulated too? What substrate supports their world? Infinite regress, like turtles all the way down, is not an explanation: it’s a hall of mirrors.
A consciousness-first model offers a different possibility: reality may be self-rendering from within. Conscious agents may not be players inside a finished game-world. Instead they may be part of the generative system through which the world appears.
I’m not presenting this as settled truth and I wouldn’t call it science in the strong sense unless it can make testable predictions, exclude alternatives, and connect rigorously with existing physics. A theory that can explain everything too easily risks explaining nothing. “Consciousness did it” can become just as empty as “God did it” if it’s used as a universal answer without mechanism or constraint.
But as a philosophical framework, I think it has merit.
It allows us to separate “simulation-like reality” from “external programmer.” It treats consciousness as active rather than incidental. It gives perception a central role without reducing the world to a set of private hallucinations. It also makes room for the persistence and coherence of shared reality, because the individual self is not the whole system.
In Summary
A compact version might be this:
The universe is not necessarily a simulation running on a machine. It may be a self-rendering consciousness field whose stable interaction patterns appear to us as matter, spacetime, causality, computation, and law.
Or, more poetically:
Reality is the hive-dream of consciousness, but the dream has rules because the hive has structure.
That’s the part I keep coming back to. The simulation hypothesis is often treated as if it points upward, toward a programmer outside the universe. But maybe it points inward instead, toward consciousness as the generative substrate of reality. Not a programmer beyond the world, but a lawful field of conscious participation within it.
Maybe there’s no one running the simulation. Maybe the simulation is what consciousness looks like from the inside.
