Why This Site Exists

This site is an archive of my ongoing investigations into systems, meaning, games, narrative, artificial intelligence, speculative futures, and related topics.

Some of these investigations begin with a question. Others begin with an observation, a contradiction, a pattern, or a half-formed idea that refuses to go away. Not every idea arrives fully formed. Many begin as fragments that may require years of reading, writing, reflection, and revision before they become something more substantial.

This site exists to give those ideas a place to incubate until ready.

Why Systems Matter

Human beings live inside systems.

Some are obvious: laws, institutions, economies, technologies, games, and organizations. Others are less visible: narratives, incentives, expectations, symbols, and shared assumptions.

Systems shape what people notice, what they value, what choices appear available, and what consequences follow from those choices. Understanding systems means understanding part of the environment in which human behavior unfolds.

Many of the essays and notes collected here explore that relationship.

Why Stories Matter

Stories aren’t merely entertainment.

Stories are one of the primary ways people model the world, communicate values, explore possibilities, and make sense of experience. They help us imagine futures, test decisions, examine conflicts, and understand the consequences of action.

My fiction and nonfiction are connected by this interest. Both are attempts to explore how people navigate complex environments, difficult constraints, uncertainty, and change.

Why Games Matter

Games make systems visible.

Rules, incentives, feedback loops, progression, cooperation, competition, and decision-making are often easier to observe in games than in many real-world environments.

For that reason, games provide a useful lens through which to study systems, behavior, learning, narrative, and meaning.

Many of the ideas explored here draw from game studies, ludonarratology, semiotics, and related fields.

Why Speculation Matters

Some questions cannot be investigated directly.

Science fiction, future studies, astrobiology, technological forecasting, and speculative thinking allow us to explore possibilities before they become realities.

Speculation isn’t the same as prediction. Its value lies in expanding the range of possibilities we consider and helping us think more clearly about long-term consequences.

Many of the essays on this site use speculative ideas as tools for inquiry rather than as claims or conclusions.

Why Publish Here First

This site is the first stop for many of my ideas.

Personal blogs allow ideas to be explored while they’re still developing. They make it possible to publish notes, essays, questions, and early investigations without waiting for a formal publication process.

Some pieces may remain personal essays. Others may eventually be expanded, revised, and refined into magazine articles, conference presentations, or academic papers.

Publication here shouldn’t be interpreted as a claim that an idea is finished. In many cases, it represents the beginning of a longer process of research, criticism, revision, and development.

This archive exists in part to document that process.

Artificial Intelligence

I use AI as a tool for brainstorming, critique, organization, outlining, research assistance, continuity checking, and editorial support.

I don’t treat AI output as authoritative, nor do I consider AI a replacement for human judgment, expertise, creativity, or responsibility.

Like any other tool, its value depends on how it’s used.

All final decisions, interpretations, conclusions, and published work remain my own responsibility.

What This Site Means To Me

I worked for years as an aerospace engineer with an inquisitive, questioning mindset and a persistent curiosity about systems, theories, futures, and ideas that had little place in my day-to-day work environment.

Now I’m retired, which has given me the freedom to return to those questions more directly.

This site is part archive, part workshop, and part record of that return. It’s where I can explore the ideas I once had to set aside, develop them at my own pace, and see which of them may eventually become essays, articles, papers, stories, or other publishable work.
